SCOPUS MCP Server

MCP server for the Scopus literature database, powered by the official Elsevier Scopus Search API.

Requirements

An Elsevier API key is required (free, personal tier, weekly quota ~20,000 requests):

  1. Go to https://dev.elsevier.com/ and sign in / register
  2. Click "Request an API Key" and create a key
  3. Set it as the ELS_API_KEY environment variable

The key is read from the environment only — never commit it to the repo.

Tools

  • search_scopus - search Scopus (plain text or raw query syntax like TITLE-ABS-KEY("cancer") AND PUBYEAR > 2019), with author/journal/year filters
  • get_scopus_article - article metadata by DOI / EID / PII / Scopus ID
  • get_scopus_citations - total and yearly citation counts for an article

Run locally

pip install -r requirements.txt
set ELS_API_KEY=your-key-here   # PowerShell
python scopus_server.py

MCP endpoint: http://localhost:8000/mcp (Streamable HTTP)

Deploy

The included Dockerfile runs the server bound to $PORT (default 8000) on 0.0.0.0. Set ELS_API_KEY as a secret environment variable on your host.
